MVP Breakdown – Kobe Bryant

The NBA regular season is coming to an end very soon and the MVP race is starting to heat up. There are 3 players who could win the award this year – Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Chris Paul. I’m going to break down each player and give my take on why they should or shouldn’t win. Enjoy!

 Black Mamba

OK, let’s face it…chances are, you probably don’t like the man pictured above. And I can guarantee you one thing, your dislike of him has nothing to do with the game of basketball. Trust me, I know. I used to be one of those “haters” too. But once the hooper in me learned to separate Kobe the person from Kobe the basketball player, I was forced to accept the fact that Kobe Bryant is the man. Plus my 3 year old son loves him so I’ve got to ride with him right? So let’s break down the hate…

1. He’s Arrogant – Let’s look at that a little closer. Kobe’s dad played professional basketball both here in the United States and in Italy. Naturally, he lived a different lifestyle from the rest of us and he was exposed to things growing up that most people will probably never get to see in their lives. So he’s not from the hood and he didn’t learn to play basketball in the streets the way most kids do either. He learned the game from and grew up playing with professional basketball players. When he was in high school John Lucas used to invite him up to 76’ers practices to scrimmage. I also heard that during these scrimmages he would go to work on Jerry Stackhouse! Did I mention that he was still in high school? So what you call arrogance, Kobe calls confidence. He knows he can’t be touched and deep down, the haters know it too.

2. He Tries To Be “Like Mike” – Michael Jordan is an icon. Michael Jordan is the only player in any sport to win a championship every time he got there. Michael Jordan is the G.O.A.T. So what’s wrong with Kobe pattering his game after the best to ever do it?! You’d be hard pressed to find one person who plays basketball that hasn’t gone out and tried to bite some of the things that MJ did on the basketball court. It just so happens that Kobe’s biting is a lot better. We all know — and Kobe knows it too — that he will never be better than Mike, but deal with it haters…he’s the closest thing to Mike there is. Emphasis on “closest” because there can be only one.

3. He Snitched on Shaq  – Go back and read #1. Pay close attention to the “he’s not from the hood” part.

These three things seem to be the main reason why people love to hate the Black Mamba. And like I said before, they have nothing to do with basketball. I won’t sit here and write out all of the things the man has accomplished over the course of his career…you can look that up yourself. But I can say this, numbers don’t lie. Even before the Pau Gasol trade, Kobe was leading the Lakers to wins without scoring a ridiculous amount of points. Now he’s more of a leader focused on making his teammates better and they’ve responded. The Lakers are second in the Western Conference behind the New Orleans Hornets and they’re contenders to win it all this year.

To be or not to be MVP…that’s not for me to decide. But hate him or love him, Kobe Bryant is the best player in the game…PERIOD. The haters are just going to have to deal with it.
