NBA – Offseason Review

OK…I haven’t posted anything in a while (sorry guys), but I just wanted to chime in on the happenings around the league over the past 2-3 weeks. So let’s see….

First, the NBA draft came and went and as I expected, Derrick Rose went number one to my beloved Chicago Bulls and Michael Beasley will join Dwyane Wade down in Miami. OJ Mayo got traded to the Memphis Grizzlies for Kevin Love (who got drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves) and what seemed like half the team! The big winner in the draft had to be the Portland Trailblazers. They picked up Jerryd Bayless to team up in the backcourt with Brandon Roy which makes them one of the most explosive backcourts in the league to go along with Greg Oden in the middle. The shock of the night had to be Russel Westbrook going #4 to (insert team name here) and the Charlotte Bobcats selecting DJ Augustin at #7?! Why? Watch out Raymond Felton!

Then came the trades…

On draft night the New Jersey Nets traded Richard Jefferson to the Milwaukee Bucks for Bobby Simmons and Yi Jianlian. I was kind of shocked by this one to be honest with you, but it looks like Jay-Z and the Nets are clearing cap space and preparing to make a run at LeBron James when the team moves to Brooklyn in a couple of years. Good move for Bobby (Chi-Town) and Yi though…more playing time ahead for both of those guys.

Then came the Jermaine O’Neal for TJ Ford trade. I actually liked that trade. First, the Toronto Raptorsnow have a solid front line with O’Neal and Chris Bosh which should be able to compete in the east along with going with Jose Calderon as the starting PG who is bigger and is a better shooter. On the Indiana Pacers side, Ford is a big step up from Jamaal Tinsley who is probably on his way out. The move allows the Pacers to get out and run on the break…now all they have to do is find players who can get out and run on the break!

Then came the free agency period…

The Washington Wizards re-signed Antawn Jamisonto a 4 yeasr $50 million dollar deal (as an apparent pre-requisite) and then offered Gilbert Arenas $111 million dollars over 6years! But that wasn’t the shock of the signing period…

Baron Davis shunned the Golden State Warriors to accept an offer from the Los Angeles Clippers worth $65 million dollars over 5 years. The Clippers then lost Elton Brand to the Philadelphia 76ers who accepted an offer of $80 million dollars over 5 years. Wow!! And it’s still early in the signing period. We’ll see what happens over the next several weeks.

Oh yeah…

The NBA Summer League kicked off in Orlando on Monday. The first game? The Chicago Bulls and Derrick Rose faced off against the Miami Heat and Michael Beasley. The line…Rose put up 10 points, 4 assists and 5 turnovers in a loss and Beasley put up 28 points and 9 rebounds! Take heart Bulls fans…it’s only summer league!

That was a condensed version of all that has happened so far. Thanks to everyone who reads regularly and I hope to not fall so far behind again!!
